clothes iron

The most common damage to carpet occurs from spills and stains. These stains are often liquid or mud that can be removed with a damp cloth or by hiring a professional carpet cleaning company. For this, we recommend https://sacramentocarpetcleaning.org.

However, carpet can incur a different kind of damage that cannot be cleaned and that is a burn spot on your carpet. This comes from dropping a candle or a cigarette or cigar on your carpet. A carpet burn can also happen if someone drops a curling iron or clothes iron on the carpet.

You cannot clean a carpet burn spot. You have to replace the portion of the carpet where the burn is located. Here are the steps necessary to repair a burn spot on your carpet:

Step 1:

The first thing you need to do is find a razorblade or box cutter and cut a perfect square around the burn spot. Cut out as little of a square as possible. Be careful using the razorblade as you will need it to be very sharp in order to create a clean cut. You also won’t to be careful not to cut out or remove the carpet pad underneath.

Be sure to save the square piece of the carpet you cut out.

Step 2:

Find a carpet remnant left over from when the carpet was installed. If you do not have a carpet remnant, you will need to find a discrete area of the carpet for this step. Now place the square piece you cut out over the carpet remnant or the area of carpet you are using and trace the square using the razorblade or box cutter and press and cut out a square the same size as the burn square.

Step 3:

Place the square cutout into the area where you cut out the burn spot. Be sure it fits in cleanly without any overlap or any of the carpet pad visible. Now apply an adhesive to the bottom of the new cutout. You can use glue or double-sided tape for this.

You can hover a clothes iron over the new square and adhesive to help it melt and bind to the carpet pad faster, however this is not necessary for success. It will only speed up the process.

Step 4:

Blend the seams and cutout lines from the new square into the carpet using a carpet tractor. You can purchase a carpet tractor online or at your local hardware store. This is a great tool for blending in carpet seems.

Step 5:

Now you can throw out the original carpet burn and let the adhesive dry to the carpet pad. We recommend you wait 24 hours before walking on the new square piece to allow it to settle into the carpet.

The entire process to repair a carpet burn spot should not require more than 30 minutes or less, however it is likely you will need to go to the hardware store in order to purchase the carpet tractor.

How to Choose an Area Rug

area rug room

One of the easiest ways to spruce up a room in your home and add a little color and style is to place an area rug in the room. This is an easy and often inexpensive option to maintain a trendy and stylish look in your home. Learn how to choose area rugs and which ones are the right ones for your room or home:

Living Room Rugs

To determine the correct size of the area rug for your living room you should measure the length and width of the seating area. The rug is going to lay within the center of the seating area after you place it so it needs to fit properly and stylishly.

The recommended layout is that all of the furniture legs from the furniture in your living room sit on the rug. This isn’t mandatory though. You can purchase a smaller rug if that is what you can afford and just place the front feet of the furniture on the rug or don’t put any furniture on the rug at all.

Another option is to place a small rug over a large rug for a layered look. You can even purchase multiple rugs for a room to clearly define seating areas and different sections of a larger or more open room in your home.

If the goal is for the area rug to cover the entire floor of a room be sure that the rug is no further than 2 ft. away from each wall.

Dining Room Rugs

If the rug is for your dining room you want it to extend at least 2 ft. beyond the sides of your dining room table.

Kitchen Rugs

Kitchen rugs and rug runners should be placed near the sink or in places you typically stand in your kitchen as well as traffic areas. The kitchen area rugs should be no further than 6 in. from the bottom of the cabinets in your kitchen.

Bedroom Rugs

For bedroom rugs, place them under the bed and ensure the rug extends at least 2 ft. beyond the sides and the foot of the bed.

Entryway Rugs

This is one of the more common locations for area rugs in your home. You can make a statement with a beautiful rug at the entryway of your home. Be sure the rug is wider than the front door.

Rug Patterns

The patterns of your rug should complement the colors of each room as well as other patterns in the room. If you already have vibrant colors and patterns it might be wise to choose a more-subtle design for your rug. If the room is subtle already, choose a more modern or stylish rug.

Traffic Rugs

Place low-pile rugs in high-traffic areas of your home. The low-pile can better withstand all of the traffic the rug will receive. You should also purchase a darker rug or a patterned rug to hide any dirt or wear associated with people walking on the rug.

Use high-pile rugs for more decorative locations.

The right area rug can transform a room in your home. We hope this information helps you choose the right area rug for your home!

5 Ways to Make Your Home More Energy-Efficient

Every month of the year, homeowners are faced with utility bills to settle and everyone is always trying all they can to minimize their expenses. The best way to improve the performance of your appliances and electrical systems is to take cost-effective measures. If you want to make your home more efficient, start by cutting down on your energy use. How, you may ask? Well, here are home improvement tips that can help.

Install Energy-Efficient Appliances

It’s time you replaced those old household appliances with modern, energy-efficient appliances. If there’s an appliance that has been in your house for about two decades, it’s time to find its modern equivalent. That could be the reason why you’ve been paying high energy bills every month. The world of technology is always changing and getting better. Manufacturers are constantly coming up with new technologies that help in increasing the efficiency of home appliances.

Modernize your Windows

There are energy-efficient models of windows which can help you in cost savings. Alternatively, you may consider upgrading your windows to boost their efficiency. All these options will improve energy efficiency in your home thereby reducing your monthly energy cost.

Plant Shade Trees around your house

Planting trees will help keep heat out in summer which means you’ll use less energy to keep your house cool using an air conditioning unit. How does it work? The foliage would prevent or rather block the solar radiation from heating your house. During the winter season, the trees will have bare branches which means the little radiation will be able to reach your home and keep your house warm.

Insulate your Ceilings and Walls

Insulating your ceilings and walls can help you save up to 30 percent of your energy bills. It also helps in reducing the carbon dioxide emissions. Those living in regions that experience colder climates are advised to super-insulate their houses to keep as much heat inside the house as possible.

Replace the old furnace

Some homeowners still have homes whose furnaces were built about twenty decades ago. Furnaces that are more than twenty years old and have a standing pilot wastes a lot of fuel due to their long service life. Consider replacing your old furnace with a condensing furnace that will save on your monthly energy bills. Contact a heating service technician to determine the AFUE of your furnace system and advise accordingly.
